Description
This is a sterling silver table spoon belonging to General Adelbert Ames, a veteran Union Army General of the Civil War, politician and one-time provisional governor of Mississippi. Ames used this handsome, engraved spoon during the Spanish-American War (circa 1898). When the war began, Ames became brigadier general of volunteers and took part in the siege of Santiago, Cuba. A Rockland, Maine native, Ames settled in Tewksbury, Massachusetts later in life, occasionally dabbling in business ventures in the nearby mill town of Lowell, as well as other locales. This spoon was found in Massachusetts, recently saved from the silver scrap pile. It was manufactured by G. H. Wood of Lowell, Massachusetts, and is maker marked on reverse. The front of the handle bears a single "A" and engraving upon the reverse references the owner and vintage of the spoon.
