ARTIFACT: This is a scarce World War I "stubby wing" style United States Air Service pilot wing in sterling silver. We recently were fortunate enough to reacquire this wing. The wing has the typical large starred and striped shield at its center.

VINTAGE: Circa World War I.

SIZE: Approximately 7/8" in height and 2-15/16" in width.

MATERIALS / CONSTRUCTION: Sterling silver with 14K gold letters and nickel findings.

ATTACHMENT: Horizontal pin with drop-in locking swivel catch.

MARKINGS: STERLING.

ITEM NOTES: This is from a United States Air Service collection which we will be listing more of over the next few months. I was very lucky recently to acquire this small collection. This particular wing has always eluded me, and suddenly in this collection, there was not one, but THREE Variations of this wing. I did not even realize that there were variations on this wing! Included in the collection were the wing you are viewing now, the most oft-encountered version of this wing with a large shield and small lettering. It looks a little unbalanced as Duncan Campbell wrote in his works on the subject. Along with this wing were not one, but TWO of the smaller-shield versions of this wing. One with thicker squared off lettering, reminiscent of the lettering on this wing, and one with large, thick ROUNDED lettering, and a MAKER'S MARK (as yet unidentified)! Of course, I wanted to keep all three variants, but economics pointed towards only keeping one, so I kept the most unusual of the three, and offered the other two for sale. Enjoy! CONDITION: 8- (Very Fine-Excellent): This wing shows very light wear only and an overall tarnish on its reverse.
