ARTIFACT:

This is a circa 1945 USRRA (United States Riviera Recreational Area) booklet for GIs entitled "Welcome to the Riviera (Bienvenue Sur la Cote d'Azur)". Set up in October 1944 by the 6th Army Group, the USRRA was a luxury get-away destination on the French Riviera for US soldiers. The booklet is named to a Staff Sgt. Paul G. Humphrey, who visited Nice in May 1945, on leave from the 5th Army, stationed in Italy. He wrote his travel information on the last "Notes" page, right before the fold-out map on Nice. The book is full of information about the area and has a few black-and-white illustrations.
