ARTIFACT: This is a scarce circa early 1942 (World War II) celluloid launch button/badge for the lost boat, USS Herring SS-233. Launched January 5, 1942, Herring completed eight war patrols, receiving five battle stars. She went missing in early June 1944, and is believed to have been sunk off Matsuwa Island in retaliation for her sinking of two Japanese merchant ships.

VINTAGE: Circa early 1942.

SIZE: Approximately 1-7/16" in diameter.

MATERIALS / CONSTRUCTION: Celluloid-wrapped tin.

ATTACHMENT: Horizontal safety-style pin.

MARKINGS: None.

ITEM NOTES: This is from a WWII United States Navy launch badge collection which we will be listing more of over the next few months. MEX14 LAAEX7/14

CONDITION: 8+ (Excellent): The badge has very little wear.
