Description
This is a scarce circa 1940 badge for the Goums (or Goumiers) Mixtes Marocains, or GMM (Mixed Moroccan Company). Goums, or companies, were initially organized as native local militia units, and later participated in World War II campaigns in Italy, France and Germany. They later served in Indochina and in the Algerian War before being absorbed into the Royal Moroccan Army at the time of the country's independence in 195The badge is large and shaped like a curved North African dagger (koumia) and has the enameled initials GMM.
VINTAGE:Circa 1940.
SIZE:Approximately 2-3/4" in height and 15/16" in width.
CONSTRUCTION / MATERIALS:Silver-plated brass with low grade enamel.
ATTACHMENT:Vertical plunger pin ("pusher" missing) with tubular catch - still functions as a C catch.
MARKINGS:None.
