Description

ARTIFACT:

This is a rare World War I United States Army Northern Russia (aka "Polar Bear") Expedition shoulder patch on wool. The American expedition, part of a larger effort by other Allied countries and as well as the "White Russians", was sent out in 1918 to the Archangel province of Siberia. The initial recruits consisted of members of the 339th Infantry Regiment, a battalion of the 310th Engineer Regiment, the 337th Ambulance Company and the 337th Field Hospital. The mission was to safeguard and redistribute ammunition from the Bolshevik element. The patch shows an embroidered polar bear at its center.

VINTAGE:

Circa World War I (1918-1919).

SIZE:

Approximately 2-5/8" in height and 3-5/8" in width.

CONSTRUCTION / MATERIALS:

Wool embroidered in silk/cotton threads.
