This is a rare circa 1930s Marine Corps Guard sweetheart sewing pillow from the United States Naval Prison at Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Placed upon the site of a Revolutionary War era post named Fort Sullivan, the Naval Prison is an imposing island-based structure modeled after Alcatraz. It was used from 1908 until 1974, and now stands in disrepair. The pillow is fringed and done in pink on one side with a large "China Marine" emblem and a "Sweetheart" poem and done in blue on the other side. It has a flap pocket in which to stow sewing notions.
Approximately 15-3/4" in height by 11-1/2" in width.
MATERIALS / CONSTRUCTION:
This is from a pre-WWII USN / USMC sweetheart collection that we will be listing more of over the next few months. ebay SHOP VAEX14 LADEX5/14
7+ (Very Fine+): The pillow shows some light fading and a few picks.
GUARANTEE: As with all my artifacts, this piece is guaranteed to be original, as described.
