ARTIFACT: This is a 1920s Radio League of America lapel pin. The pin is enameled vividly in blue, white and orange and shows a radio tower at center. Founded in 1915 by Hugo Gersnback, The Radio League of America aimed to promote the art of amateur wireless telegraphy and telephony in the United States. The League also encouraged the amateur radio stations to assist the US in communication during World War I. Hugo Gernsback established the league as a "purely scientific organization" that could send messages by way of Morse code to the US Government through chains of relay stations. The Radio League of America ended almost simultaneously with the last edition of Gernsback's magazine The Electrical Experimenter in 1920. Hugo Gernsback is well-known, he published many magazines and science fiction works. The World Science Fiction Convention presents "The Hugos" annually to award distinguished individuals in science fiction, an award named in honor of Hugo Gernsback.
