ARTIFACT:

This is a 1971 Recon Team Hot Cake Pocket Patch of Malen KIng. In the Summer of 1971, Malen King, the US Mess Hall, Non Commissioned Officer In Charge (NCOIC) became envious of all the Recon Team's sporting their personalized insignia and decided he and his staff needed a team name with a patch of their own. With some thought on an R&R (Rest and Recuperation) trip to Taiwan he created Recon Team Hotcake, penciled a designed and had team patches made. King proudly wore the insignia on his uniform while his staff applied them to their dish aprons. It should be noted this was just Kings way of joking with the recon personnel they fed and that RT Hotcake was never a real recon team. The machine embroidered insignia had a bomb burst shape with a red and yellow border. In the center of the patch is a white skull wearing a chief's hat with crossed ladles and a pancake under the jaw.
