ARTIFACT:
This is a Extremely Rare ca 1941 John EK Model #2 Commando Knife Made at the Guilford CT Whitney Machine Shop, and marked as such.
This shop was set up early in WWII for Ek to produce parts for US Army Paratrooper Folding Bicycles.
This knife was originally carried in the China Burma India Theater by a combat medic in the US Army, Corporal Olaf L. Rosdahl, of the 73rd Evacuation Hospital. Corporal Rosdahl was overseas for 2-1/2 years in WWII.
John Ek's son appraised this knife in 2018 and the post on his Facebook Page (Ek Knives (Real John Ek Commando Knives)) from 10 April 2018 and this is what he wrote:
Not only is it an Authentic John Ek WW2 Commando Knife Model # 2, but that is the oldest one that I have seen in My Life,
I had two others that were hand engraved from before my Father moved the factory from Whitney, CT to Hamden.....
But this Model # 2 Serial # B121 - is the first one to be Engraved "WHITNEY MACHINE SHOP"
With it's Maple Handles, it appears to be in Perfect Condition.
Here is My Appraisal:
This is an Original WWII era John Ek Commando Knife from Whitney, CT circa 1941-1944.
The Handles were Made of Oil Stained Rock Maple, and held by Lead/Tin hot poured Rivets.
A Double edged Model # 2 with serial # B 121
Puts it early at the old factory in Whitney, Ct.
This knife is in Perfect condition, although it was most likely used and abused, remember that these were made as a fighting knife, and very few survived WWII.
Looks like this one was used for its intended purpose and brought its owner safely back home.
I would estimate it's current value at $10,200 with an original sheath.
Ek Commando Knife Co. or Ek Knives is an American combat knife brand produced by several different companies since the original founded by John Ek in 1941. In May 2014 the Ek brand as purchased by Ka-Bar which began selling its versions of Ek knife designs in 2015. Although not officially issued gear, Ek Knives have seen use by US forces in six major conflicts: World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Gulf War, Afghanistan and the Iraq War. Ek Knives manufactures Bowie-style blades, daggers, and a Fairbairn-Sykes MkII. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Clark Gable, and General George S. Patton have been identified as Ek knife owners.
