ARTIFACT: This is a nice World War II period United States Army Air Forces flight engineer wing by Meyer. It is in a two-piece construction made of sterling silver. This wing is lovely, with bits of original lacquering still on the obverse and a nice dark patina on the reverse. The rarity of these wings is often under appreciated. The September 1945 edition of Air Force states,  "The Superfortress (B-29) Flight Engineer may now be identified by the wings he wears. LT. GEN. Barton K. Yount's AAF Training Command has announced that henceforth all graduates of the Command's Flight Engineering Course will be awarded the new Aviation Badge reproduced here. Instructors and recent graduates now undergoing B-29 transition training are changing over to the new type of wings." The article goes on to say that, previously, flight engineers were awarded aircraft observer wings. This may be the only example of a rating badge being introduced as a result of a specific aircraft type entering service. The wing was first authorized 19 June 1945.

VINTAGE: Circa World War II.

SIZE: Approximately 3" x 1-1/8"

MATERIALS / CONSTRUCTION: Sterling silver.

ATTACHMENT: Horizontal pin with come-under swivel locking catch.

CONDITION: 8- (Very Fine-Excellent): The wing shows light wear and tarnish and a nice dark patina on the reverse, overall excellent condition.
