Western Union was born in 1856, although it had been operating for five years already under the name New York and Mississippi Valley Printing Telegraph Company. "Close Lock to Get Key Out" is helpfully posted on the back. The handle has a Newark, New Jersey maker mark.

VINTAGE: Circa 1890's.

SIZE: Approximately 3-1/2" in height and 2-1/8" in width; chain is about 9" in length.

MATERIALS / CONSTRUCTION: Brass.

ATTACHMENT: Handle, chain.

MARKINGS: Makers mark should read J.H.W. Climax Co. Newark, NJ, but is difficult to see.

ITEM NOTES: This is from an old telegraph company collection that we will be listing more of over the next few months. ebay MFEX98 LADEX1/14

CONDITION: 7+ (Very Fine+): The lock has some light wear and a great patina.
