ARTIFACT:
Great, early WWII United States Army Air Forces 35th Fighter Squadron, 8th Fighter Group, 5th Air Force Jacket Patch. During WWII the group was stationed in the Southwest Pacific Theater and helped Australia defend themselves against the invading Japanese Imperial Army and then headed towards Port Moresby in New Guinea. The unit operated P-39 & P-40 aircraft during this period and were met with muddy conditions, food shortage, mosquitoes, excessive rain and hot temperatures and daily night raids. The oval jacket patch features the squadron emblem of a black panther running with blood dripping from its mouth and its right paw outstretched as if to swat or scratch an oncoming enemy, the patch is embroidered on gray cotton twill with a blue edge and backed with gauze.
