ARTIFACT: Great circa 1970 MACV SOG (Military Assistance Command, Vietnam - Studies and Observations Group), United States Army Special Security Group plaque to Colonel (and eventual Brigadier General) Richard S. Kotte from Special Security Office, SOG. The MACV SOG was a covert group of multiple forces that carried out secret, unconventional warfare tactics during Vietnam. The MACV SOG was comprised of personnel from the US Army, the USN SEALs, the USAF, the CIA, and USMC and participated in most of the significant campaigns: the Gulf of Tonkin, Operation Steel Tiger, Operation Tiger Hound, the Tet Offensive, Operation Commando Hunt, the Cambodian Campaign, Operation Lam Son 719, and the Easter Offensive. The mahogany plaque, made in-country, features a painted brass disc that shows a white center bearing the unit's insignia, a skull wearing a green beret, above which shows USAF wings and an anchor below. Just under the skull it reads: "MAC V SOG" in yellow painted detail. A black ring surrounds the outer edge and reads: "UNITED STATES ARMY SPECIAL SECURITY GROUP MACV". Beneath the painted brass insignia, a brass plate reads: "TO COL. RICHARD KOTITE FROM SSO SOG". Kotite was a recipient of the Distinguished Service Cross for showing heroism against the armed enemy and the Purple Heart (for more details use the address below).
