ARTIFACT:

Gorgeous circa 1952 Korean War era United States Marine Corps VMA-121 Japanese-made jacket patch by New Itami Studio. This example/design is beautiful and though unauthorized, was worn and is in near mint condition. The patch is fully embroidered in a stunning array of different colored bullion. The center of the diamond-shaped patch shows the outline of Korea with the squadron numbers: "121" at the top. The center features a beautifully embroidered A-1 Skyraider aircraft and reads: "KOREA" below. In August of 1951 the VMA-151 received the order to engage in combat. In October, the Marine Attack Squadron boarded the USS Sitkoh Bay (CVE-86) and made their way to Pohang Air Base to begin operations. The VMA-121 dropped more bomb tonnage than any other Navy or Marine squadron during the Korean War. Many members of the squadron remained in Korea through the Korean Armistice Agreement.
