ARTIFACT:

Gorgeous 1890's British 16th Lancers Officer's Mess Dress Belt Buckle in fire gilt brass. Original owner initials engraved on reverse: "H.T." The buckle depicts the 16th Lancers emblem surrounded by gorgeous 3D-like floral details. Mess uniforms first appeared in the British Army in about 184The original purpose was to provide a relatively comfortable and inexpensive alternative to the stiff and elaborate full-dress uniforms then worn by officers for evening social functions such as regimental dinners or balls.
