ARTIFACT: Simple but poignant door sign from Flying Tigers Headquarters in Kunming. Hand painted on cedar, the primitive nature of this sign shows the level of materials the AVG had to work with in those early days of WWII in war-torn China. The sign is split in half lengthwise and reglued. The sign corresponds with similar signs recorded in a period photograph. The sign would have belonged to Skip Adair who was appointed by the White House to recruit pilots and various ground personnel for the AVG. He describes in his letters home that his duties "include "Acting Commanding Officer while Claire is away" and also Supply, Food, Transportation, Housing, and at times Adjutant and Finance. Various orders appoint him "Group Executive Officer" and "Group Commander in absence of General Chennault" [1] A famous photo from Larry Pistole's book, "The Pictorial History of the Flying Tigers" showing signs of the same construction for other AVG HQ offices on page 165 as pictured above. [1] Information on Skip Adair retrieved online from The Flying Tigers, AVG American Volunteer Group website under biographies. Artifacts that belonged to members of the original Flying Tigers are extremely hard to acquire and rarely come up for sale. Often collectors lucky enough to acquire anything from the AVG will hold onto the pieces for their entire lifetime and families rarely let these artifacts go if they are lucky enough to still possess them. Don't miss this chance to own a true piece of WWII Aviation History.
