Description
This is an extremely rare high-ranking "executive" American Protective League (APL) type III badge from the World War I era. Formed in 1917, the APL was a citizens' organization collaborating with federal officials against alleged German and other foreign sympathizers and rabble-rousers in general. The APL's tactics were not held in high esteem by A. Mitchell Palmer, the new Attorney General who took over in 1919, and the group's semi-official status was revoked. The APL dissolved after the armistice was signed. The badge is numbered C53 at its center.
