ARTIFACT: Extremely Rare Early WWII Flying Tigers Honorable Discharge of Crew Chief John L. Overley, 2nd Squadron

Offered here is an excellent example of one of the scarcest pieces of AVG paper documentation one can find: an original member's Diploma Type Honorable Discharge Certificate. Less than 300 of these were issued, and only one was issued per recipient.

This Diploma Type American Volunteer Group Discharge was received directly from the niece of the original owner. It was issued to John Overley, who was a Ground Crew Chief for the AVG, serving in the 2nd Squadron, also known as the "Panda Bears", and after staying on an extra 2 weeks to help the USAAF 23rd Fighter Group get acclimated, went back to serving with the US Navy as an Aviation Mechanic for the duration of the war.

This Discharge is hand signed twice, and initialed once, by the famous leader of the Flying Tigers, Claire L. Chennault. It comes with the original mailing envelope, and a period "negative" photocopy, making it one of the most "complete" examples I have ever seen or heard of in a collection.

VINTAGE: Circa early WWII

SIZE: Approximately: Discharge Paper: 11" x 9"; Photocopy: 11" x 8-1/2"; Envelope: 12" x 9-1/2"

MATERIALS / CONSTRUCTION: Card stock, mailing stamps, photocopy negative, staples, gilt and painted embossed AVG emblem on discharge.

ATTACHMENT: Staples (attaching the two pieces of the negative copy), Flap closure on envelope

MARKINGS: "REGISTERED MAIL NO 3110511 RETURN RECEIPT REQUESTED", "CENTRAL AIRCRAFT MANUFACTURING CO. FEDERAL INC., U. S. A. 30 ROCKEFELLER PLAZA NEW YORK, N. Y.
