Description

ARTIFACT:

This is a 1956 bound copy of the CAT (Civil Air Transport) Bulletin, Volume 9, Numbers 1 through 1CAT was a Chinese airline established in 1946 by famed General and leader of the American Volunteer Group, Claire Chennault, along with Whiting Willauer. The company's airplanes, many of them piloted by former Flying Tigers, first flew humanitarian airlifts and then became integral in Chiang Kai-Shek's efforts against the Communists in China, eventually evacuating Chinese citizens to Taiwan after the fall of his government. In 1950 the CIA acquired CAT and used the airline for secret missions to China even though on the surface it appeared to be solely a civilian airline. These bound volumes originally belonged to Eve Myers, who was Claire Chennault's personal secretary and what appears to be the CAT office manager after he passed away in 1958 (Eve is shown in the last two photos above). CAT became Air America in 195Each volume has several photographs (some of Chennault), human interest stories, company information, some AVG reunion articles and tons of super "CAT" advertisements. Madame Chennault is shown sitting in the middle of the three women pictured (above). We have several other bound volumes representing different years available for sale separately: please see links at the bottom of this page.
