ARTIFACT:

Very rare mid-1940's Vermont Motor Vehicle Department Inspector 4th Issue / Series badge. The Vermont Motor Vehicle Department Inspectors were the only Statewide Motor Vehicle enforcement agency prior to the formation of the Vermont State Police and this badge is considered in direct lineage of collectable VT State Police badges. The Vermont Highway Patrol was formed in 1925, of 10 Motor Vehicle Inspectors, mostly on Motorcycles, and a circle cut out star shield shape badge was used initially. This badge is considered the 4th issue and was used from some time in the early to mid 1940's (I have seen a photograph of the similar, 3rd Issue badge in use as early as 1933) until 1947 when the VT State Police was formed under the Department of Public Safety. It is estimated that there were never more than 37 Motor Vehicle Inspectors on Duty prior to the formation of the Vermont State Police, and more often the number was closer to 10-20 Inspectors.

The badge style, also worn later by the Vermont Highway Patrol, is ornately embellished, the center showing the coat of arms for Vermont - a tall evergreen in a field with a cow, the mountains behind on the horizon, and detailed clouds in the sky and surrounding it reads: "VERMONT FREEDOM AND UNITY". An eagle sits atop and beneath, it reads: "INSPECTOR MOTOR VEHICLE DEPT." The very base of the badge shows the state initials: "VT".

VINTAGE: Circa Mid 1940's.

SIZE: Approximately 2-3/8" x 1-1/2".

MATERIALS / CONSTRUCTION: Nickel plated brass.

ATTACHMENT: Vertical kick pin - 'C' catch missing.

MARKINGS: "1358", "WASHINGTON, D. C. 1937"

ITEM NOTES: This is from a police and law enforcement collection which we will be listing more of over the next few months. VBFHX14 LABIEX1/16 TRABIEX6/16

CONDITION: 6+ (Fine&emdash;Very Fine): The badge shows minor to moderate wear mostly to high points, the 'C' catch is missing. Overall, the badge is in nice condition with much of the nickel plating details remaining intact.

GUARANTEE: As with all my artifacts, this piece is guaranteed to be original, as described.
