ARTIFACT: Very cool vintage, 1923 Dons of Peralta Member lapel pin. In the early 1920's the Dons of Peralta joined together to spread a message and lifestyle of "peace and harmony, intercity cooperation, a community spirit of working and pulling together for a common purpose" with a goal of uniting the seven East Bay cities in California: Oakland, Berkeley, Alameda, Piedmont, Emeryville, San Leandro and Albany. Membership in 1924 topped 4,000 and events and festivals were held to spread the message of unity, an article in Bubbles, an East Bay Water Co., August 1924 publication states: "When people play together they can work together — and the Obapesla celebration is a play festival — it paves the way for earnest, conscientious effort on the part of the men and women" (www.mocavo.com/Bubbles-1923-Volume-7/567023/78). The pin is shaped like the iconic membership hats worn - black felt with red and yellow satin ribbon. The black and red enameled pin reads: "1923 OBAPESLA DONS OF PERALTA" and was made by Ed. Jones Co. This is a great piece of California History, below is a link to the Oakland Museum of California’s gift of an original Dons of Peralta hat currently on display.
