ARTIFACT: This is a circa 1900 J. G. McCullough Engine Company badge from North Bennington, Vermont. McCullough, a Delaware native and lawyer by trade, traveled westward, seeking warmer climates in an effort to restore his poor health. Seized with fervor to guard the Union against secession, McCullough supported General Sumner at Alcatraz. McCullough was elected to the California State Senate, eventually becoming its Attorney General. He became the President of Panama Railway through his marriage and the death of his father-in-law. After relocating to Vermont after the war, he became active in banking and the railroad business and also achieved the Governorship of the Green Mountain State. He was revered in North Bennington, as the engine company was named after him.
