ARTIFACT: This is a circa 1930s Pennsylvania Motor Patrol (of the State Police) hat badge by EBY Company. The badge is a keystone reading PMP at top and showing the State of Pennsylvania flag emblem at center. In 1923 the Pennsylvania Department of Highways created a State Highway Patrol to enforce Motor Vehicle Laws. In 1937 the State Highway Patrol was put under State Police control and became the Pennsylvania Motor Police.
The Pennsylvania Motor Police started out with 650 Officers and 275 Troopers and never got any larger than a maximum number of 1600 men. In 1943 the Pennsylvania Motor Police was absorbed back into the Pennsylvania State Police and ceased to exist as a separate Organization.
The Pennsylvania Motor Police never wore a breast badge, the members carried a wallet badge. Their only outward uniform insignia was a Pennsylvania Motor Police patch on their shoulder, and this hat badge on their Campaign Hat.
This is a very rare, early, and short-lived piece of Pennsylvania State Police Motor Vehicle Enforcement History.
