ARTIFACT:

What we have here is an incredible piece of Wild West History: The circa late 1890's Six Point Star TOWN MARSHAL Badge from THERMOPOLIS WYOMING!
Not only is this badge extremely important in the outlaw history of the Old West, but it is also one of the LARGEST Old West Badges that we have ever had the opportunity to offer.

And what a locale: Thermopolis Wyoming! Frequent hideout and hangout of many members of The Wild Bunch, especially Robert Leroy Parker & Harry Alonzo Longabaugh, better known as Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid.

Their, and reportedly about 100 other outlaws' & cattle rustlers', favorite local drinking establishment was The Hole in the Wall Bar. Undoubtedly this bar got its name from the Hole-In-The-Wall Ranch in nearby Johnson County (which Thermopolis was actually a part of back in the Wild West period), a home away from home and well-established hideout for the Wild Bunch and the eponymous Hole-In-The-Wall Gang. Other favorite haunts were the Happy Jack Bar, and Cassidy & Company could often be found playing cards at The River Saloon's Poker Room.

One reason they liked Thermopolis so much was its remoteness, the Town has always been far away from the county seat, and therefore, from law enforcement. This Town Marshal badge represents what little there was, and one has to imagine a blind eye was turned more often than not in a place like Thermopolis, where lawmen probably enjoyed many of the same pastimes as the outlaws.

A true piece of Old West History, this is one of the most exciting badges we have been privileged to offer to our any clients. A must have for any enthusiast of the Old West, and any collector of Butch & Sundance memorabilia.

A giant of a badge, hand stamped and hand formed in far off Kansas City Missouri at Partridge & Scotford Stamp Works. So "hand stamped" in fact that the M in THERMOPOLIS apparently had to be corrected: it looks as though THERHOPOLIS was stamped first. Signs of the repair can be seen on the back of the badge.

VINTAGE: 1890s.

SIZE: Approximately: 3-1/2" in height x 3" in width. Highly convex, the badge is about 1/4" in depth.

MATERIALS / CONSTRUCTION: Nickel plated nickel badge, brass pin, tinned steel saddle, lead solder, & black painted details.

ATTACHMENT: Vertical safety-style pin with rectangle saddle.

MARKINGS: Partridge & Scotford (partially worn out)

K, C, MO. (Kansas City Missouri)

ITEM NOTES: This is from a police and law enforcement collection which we will be listing more of over the next few months. CON-DLH- MAGDJX25 LEEGEX04/15/25 SEJJJ04/18/25

CONDITION: 7 (Very Fine): Just the right amount of wear that you like to see on a 130-year-old badge to show that it's "been there": some wear, some dings & scratches, about 50% of the black paint still left in the lettering. Simply beautiful in its appearance.

GUARANTEE: As with all my artifacts, this piece is guaranteed to be original, as described.
