ARTIFACT: This is a beautiful and extremely rare World War I badge for the United States Air Service 9th Aero Squadron. The 9th was formed on June 14, 1917. Before shipping off to England to train under the Royal Flying Corps, they built the first plane ever to fly out of Selfridge Field in Michigan. Transferred to France in August 1918, the 9th was involved in the Meuse-Argonne Offensive and other missions, many of them night maneuvers. The badge was made in France from enameled silver. The emblem is a clever juxtaposition of three searchlights that form a Roman numeral IX.

VINTAGE: Circa World War I.

SIZE: Approximately 1" in diameter.

MATERIALS / CONSTRUCTION: Silver, enamel.

ATTACHMENT: Horizontal T-style pin with C catch.

MARKINGS: None.

ITEM NOTES: This is from a United States Air Service badge collection which we will be listing more of over the next few months. PGEJL13 LBDEJX9/13 TrBDEJ10/13

CONDITION: 7+ (Very Fine+): The badge has some light wear and a very small flake in the enamel at approximately one o'clock; some tarnish upon the reverse.

GUARANTEE: As with all my artifacts, this piece is guaranteed to be original, as described.
