ARTIFACT: Beautiful circa 1924 Orient Line Australia boxed double deck of round playing cards in excellent condition. The Orient Steam Navigation Company (The Orient Line) was first established in the late 1870's as a British shipping company. During the early 1900's, the company expanded its fleet of ships, giving each a name beginning with the letter 'O', but all were commandeered for service during WWI and some were lost during battle. Those not destroyed were returned and began sailing again in 1919 and even during The Great Depression, the company was able to build back its fleet, only to turn them over for war service again during WWII resulting in the loss of four ships. During the 1960's The Orient Line merged with the Peninsular & Oriental Steam Navigation Company, dropping the Orient name in 1966, the company was then called P&O Fleet until a merger in 2006.
The double deck of round cards feature gilt edges, a beautifully colored image of a sailing ship and scrolls that read: "THE ORIENT LINE TO AUSTRALIA", with blank Jokers and nicely decorated Aces of Spades, which read: "ALL-BRITISH MAKE" above a crest-like image in the center of the spade that reads: "THE ORIENT LINE TO AUSTRALIA" and below "JOHN WADDINGTON LTD LEEDS & LONDON". The inside cover of the box reads: "ORIENT LINE MAIL STEAMER BETWEEN LONDON AND AUSTRALIA", "Calling at Gibraltar, Toulon, Naples, Egypt, and Ceylon", "SHORT SEA TOURS Spain & Morocco South of France & Riviera Italy & Sicily", "ORIENT CRUISES TO", "Mediterranean & Adriatic Canary Islands Norway & Northern Capitals", "BY 20,000 TON STEAMERS", "Managers: ANDERSON, GREEN & CO., LTD.", "5 Fenchurch Avenue, London, E.C. 3."
