Description

ARTIFACT:

This is a 1990 commemorative badge for the 125th anniversary of the F.D.N.Y. (Fire Department of the City of New York). Now a respected entity, the first manifestation of the F.D.N.Y. garnered some resentment when it was created after the Act of 1865 joined New York City and Manhattan into a Metropolitan District. The new, official metropolitan department of paid firefighters supplanted the volunteer force that had so long been an important part of the City, and not everyone in the wake of the Civil War was content with the situation at first. The badge is numbered 217 on reverse, and has a Blackinton maker mark.
