Description
This is a beautiful circa 1900 Norwegian brooch in .830 silver. The scene on the brooch depicts the "Birch Legs": soldiers who in the early 13th century skied through treacherous conditions to safeguard the baby and heir of their murdered king, King Haakon. The soldiers wore birch bark leggings to protect their extremities from the wintry weather. The brooch reads "Birkebeinerne redder unge Haakon Haakonson paa ski til Trondheim" (The Birch Legs save young Haakon Haakonson on skis to Trondheim).
