Description

ARTIFACT:

This is a circa 1890s helmet badge for the United States Army 102nd Cavalry Essex Troops of Newark, New Jersey. Loosely formed in 1890 by Colonel James E. Fleming of the "Essex Club", the Essex Troop mustered for regular drills and participated in parades and other events. In 1893 they petitioned to become a cavalry troop of the National Guard of New Jersey and were accepted. The badge is in a starburst design with an enameled oval at center bearing a horse's head and the Essex Troops cipher (ET).

VINTAGE:

Circa 1890s.

SIZE:

Approximately 2-11/16" in height and 2-11/16" in width".

CONSTRUCTION / MATERIALS:

Silver-plated brass, gilt brass, enamel.

ATTACHMENT:

Prongs.
