ARTIFACT: This is a hardcover copy of "U.S. Handguns of World War II: The Secondary Pistols and Revolvers" by Charles W. Pate. This book is a superior reference for all gun collectors, with black-and-white photographs and very detailed research on guns of different manufacture and style. This volume covers all handguns used by the United States during World War II (except for the Model 1911A1 .45 caliber pistol), including Commando, police and detective firearms. The book identifies proof and inspection marks and includes serial number lists. Although the title mentions World War II specifically, some of the book's history reaches back before the Second World War, explaining the process and entities responsible for the procurement of "commerical" guns for military use. It was published in 1998.
