Description
This is a 1941 celluloid submarine badge for USS S-48 (SS-159), which was launched in 1920 and sank later that year during a trial dive (all hands were saved). She was raised and repaired, and served her country during both World Wars. This ribbon is from the period just before S-48 left Philadelphia Navy Yard for World War II service as a training command support vessel. The badge is by Philadelphia Badge Company and has a navy blue ribbon attached.
VINTAGE:Circa 1941.
SIZE:Approximately 1-3/4" in diameter with approximately 1-3/4" long ribbon.
CONSTRUCTION / MATERIALS:Celluloid-wrapped tin, silk ribbon, paper backing.
ATTACHMENT:Straight pin.
