ARTIFACT: 1930's Italian lapel pin for Skeet Shooting Association of Venice. The center of the pin features a raised "fero da pror" or "dol fin" (the prow-head of a gondola) and surrounding it, a blue enamel ring reads: "TIRO A VOLO VENEZIA" (Skeet Shooting Venice). The pin is topped with an eagle in flight. Skeet shooting was invented in Andover, Massachusetts in the 1920's. Historians of the sport claim the word "skeet" was derived from the Norwegian word 'skyte', which means 'shoot'. During WWII, the US Military used skeet shooting tactics to teach gunners the principles of shooting flying targets.
