ARTIFACT: This is a 1930s North & South of the Border Badge Grouping of San Diego Deputy Constable, Deputy Sheriff & Policeman Manuel Smith. A rare and historical grouping named to Manuel Smith and includes (left to right)

Manuel Smith (1907 - 1947) was born in Alamo, Mexico, and served as San Diego County Deputy Sheriff from 1935 - 1937, and as a San Diego Police Officer from 1937 - 1947 (there are none of his SD PD Badges in this grouping).  Smith was presumably a San Diego County Deputy Constable prior to his work as a Deputy Sheriff, based on the inclusion of that badge in this grouping. The Deputy Constable badge actually dates to the early 1900's - 1910's, but would have been worn by Smith no earlier than the late 1920's. The 6 point star Special Deputy Sheriff badge also dates to earlier, circa WWI, but would have been worn by Smith in the early 1930's, pre-1936 when the "DORT" badge came out.

Smith also was an interpreter/liaison between Mexico and the United States and worked for both San Diego County and the United States government simultaneously, a rare experience.  His time as an interpreter is mentioned in a book by Ethan Nadelmann titled: "Cops Across Borders: The Internationalization of U.S. Criminal Law Enforcement (Big City and Border Policing, page 179 - see link below).  Manuel Smith died in a plane crash in 1947 (see link to San Diego Police Museum below).
