ARTIFACT: This is an 1890's Chicago Great Western Railroad Brakeman Hat Badge in Nickel Plated Brass. Original Wears' Name Scratched onto the Back. Appears to Read: Jack Farman


A brakeman is a rail transport worker whose original job was to assist the braking of a train by applying brakes on individual wagons. The advent of through brakes, brakes on every wagon which could be controlled by the driver, made this role redundant, although the name lives on, for example, in the United States where brakemen carry out a variety of functions both on the track and within trains.

VINTAGE: 1890s.

SIZE: Approximately 13/16" in height x 3-9/16" in width.

MATERIALS / CONSTRUCTION: Nickel-plated brass.

ATTACHMENT: Two holes.

MARKINGS: Jack Farman (Hand Original Wears' Name Scratched onto the Back. Appears to Read: Jack Farman)
