ARTIFACT: This is a wonderful prosthetic "peg" leg from the mid-nineteenth century or earlier. The peg leg is in painted, gilded wood with brass, copper and iron, as well as Buff leather. Typically associated with pirates from the sixteenth through nineteenth centuries, the peg leg was developed in the Dark Ages, and other prostheses composed of metal with a wood core have been dated as far back as 300 B.C. (credit to www.amputee-coalition.org). One wide strap and two narrower straps go around the upper half, where the amputated stump would fit into the wooden crotch, which is shaped almost like a tuning fork. The whole squared-off enclosure is in turn supported by a tapering wood end which is reinforced by metal bands. The brass cap at the bottom creates the signature click of a peg leg.

VINTAGE: Circa mid-19th century (or earlier).

SIZE: Approximately 34" in length, 7" in width and 4-1/2" in depth.

MATERIALS / CONSTRUCTION: Painted, gilded wood, brass, iron, copper, Buff leather.

ATTACHMENT: Four Buff leather straps with buckles, screws.

MARKINGS: None.

ITEM NOTES: This is from a medical and humanitarian collection which we will be listing more of over the next few months. ebay VCDEX12 LABJJX10/12 SGEJX8/15

CONDITION: 6 (Fine+): The leg has seen its fair share of wear and some rusting around the screws, but is structurally sound.

GUARANTEE: As with all my artifacts, this piece is guaranteed to be original, as described.
