This is a circa World War I “death penny” memorial medal from the United Kingdom. It is inscribed to Sher Ali, who served as a fireman in the Indian Merchant Service and died in 1918. This medal was given to the families of men who fell in service between 1914 and 1920. The medal reads HE DIED FOR FREEDOM AND HONOUR along its perimeter, and shows Brittania, a lion, two dolphins and Germany’s eagle being torn apart by another smaller lion, all in relief.
Circa World War I.
Approximately 4-3/4" in diameter and 1/8” in thickness.
