ARTIFACT: This is a circa 1944 Jefferson Davis Historical Gold Medal pin of the United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC) awarded to Nancy Schenk. The pin features a Maltese cross in the center and the UDC monogram, surrounding it, a ring of white enamel reads Jefferson Davis' famous battle command: "STAND FAST" and below: "OUR HERITAGE". The Jefferson Davis Historical Gold Medal is given for: "outstanding contributions in furthering the study and preservation of Confederate history through historical research, writing, public speaking, and other points of special achievement in keeping with the historical aims and purposes of the Organization". The medal is the highest award bestowed by the UDC to non-members. The UDC was started in 1894 in Nashville, Tennessee, as the National Association of the Daughters of the Confederacy, and the name was shortened one year later. Membership is extended to "women who are blood descendants, lineal or collateral, of men or women who served honorably in the Army, Navy or Civil Service of the Confederate States of America, or gave material aid to the (Confederate) Cause". The pin reverse reads: "NANCY SCHENK 1944".

SIZE: Approximately 3/4" in diameter.

MATERIALS / CONSTRUCTION: Gold-filled sterling silver, enamel.

ATTACHMENT: Horizontal pin with drop-in locking swivel catch, suspension loop.
