ARTIFACT:
Rare, beautiful, and historically important cased silver George W. Harris Achievement medal awarded to Louis Fabian Bachrach in 1962 by the Photographers Association of America. Balfour struck only twenty of these medals and the criteria for recipients - beyond the distinguished service to photography - was specified by Mr. Harris himself as: "a token of high esteem to an individual who by his ability, ingenuity and gracious sharing of his talents has bequeathed to photography an achievement of service of far reaching value." The twenty Awards were given out between 1951 and 2004.
Louis Fabian Bachrach comes from a line of photographers, his grandfather established Bacharach Studios in Maryland back in 1868 and is said to have photographed Lincoln during the Civil War. Louis Fabian, known professionally as Fabian followed in his father and grandfather's footsteps and became a well-known, highly skilled photographer with a distinguished client list. He graduated from Harvard and served in the US Navy as an aerial navigator in the Pacific Theater of WWII. Richard Nixon, Ted Kennedy, Robert Frost, Ronald Reagan, Joe DiMaggio, and J. F. K. are among Fabian's most famous subjects. A photo taken by Fabian of John F. Kennedy while he served as senator was later used as his official photo during his presidency.
The sterling medal shows the bust of a woman wearing a crown of leaves in nice relief detail and surrounding reads: "THE PHOTOGRAPHERS ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA", "GEORGE W. HARRIS ACHIEVEMENT AWARD" and the reverse reads: "LOUIS FABIAN BACHRACH 1962". This example remains in its original display case and came along with a newspaper clipping about Fabian's life and achievements shortly after his death at age 92 (see photo).

CONDITION:
8- (Very Fine - Excellent): The medal shows minor to moderate wear, the case shows moderate wear and some slight separation near the edges of the 'hinge', much of the plated details remain intact, overall excellent condition.
