This is an 1857 California gold dollar that was fashioned into a stickpin sometime in the 1870s or 1880s. The dollar is in high karat gold and the pin is in gold-plated nickel. The front of the dollar, which measures only 7/16” in diameter, shows an Indian head and the reverse reads CALIFORNIA GOLD. This would most likely have been worn as a cravat pin.
