ARTIFACT: Scarce circa 1900 United States Life Saving Service medal from the Surfmens Mutual Benefit Association. The bronze medal features a lifesaving buoy with a paddle and spear crossed in the front. Surrounding the edges of the buoy in embossed lettering, it reads: "U. S. LIFE SAVING SERVICE". The medallion is suspended from a bar which reads: "S. M. B. A." and is topped with the breast of a spread-winged eagle. Attached to the reverse of the bar is a red, white, and blue vertically striped silk ribbon and the reverse also features two maker's marks and remnant of the maker's original paper stamp. The US Coast Guard, formed when the Revenue Cutter Service (Massachusetts) merged with the Life Saving Service in the 1940's.

MATERIALS / CONSTRUCTION: Bronze with silk ribbon.

ATTACHMENT: Horizontal pin with 'C' type catch.

MARKINGS: "THE WHITEHEAD & HOAG CO. NEWARK, N.J." along the top of the suspension bar and on the back of the medallion.

CONDITION: 8+ (Excellent): The medal shows minor to moderate wear and small areas of oxidation. The silk ribbon shows moderate soiling/age/storage wear and the reverse displays remnants of the maker's original paper stamp, overall the medal is in excellent condition.
