ARTIFACT:
This is an 1884 history of the Civil War entitled "Blue and Gray" by the Reverends Theodore Gerrish and John S. Hutchinson. The book was named for the poem of the same name by the Honorable Francis M. Finch, a Justice of the Supreme Court from New York State. The book is identified as belonging to a Newburyport, Massachusetts soldier of the 23rd Regiment, Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, John L. Howard, who also became part of G.A.R. Post 49. He wrote an 1888 inscription in the front of this copy. The book was published by Brady, Mace & Company of Bangor, Maine and has several maps, the order of battle and a comprehensive roster. This has a great old time embossed cover with gilt details showing the Union Jack and the United States flag as well as soldiers from either sides in a handshake.

816 pages; approximately 9" in height and 6-1/2" in width and 2-1/8" in thickness.

CONDITION:
7 (Very Fine): The book has some light to medium wear to the cover with some minor splitting at the spine; overall light yellowing of inside pages with no rips, writing or stains.
