ARTIFACT: WWII Purple Heart in box with some paperwork naming original recipient Clifford Smith of the United States Army. The paperwork includes, the card stock that came along with the medal and reads: "WAR DEPARTMENT WASHINGTON, D. C." across the top and in the center it reads: "IT IS AN HONOR TO FORWARD THIS DECORATION" and the bottom is signed by "ROBERT P. PATTERSON SECRETARY OF WAR". A second piece included is an American Legion card. It read"THE AMERICAN LEGION IN RECOGNITION OF LOYAL AND EFFICIENT SERVICE This testimonial of personal appreciation is recorded in behalf of CLIFFORD SMITH, COMMANDER POST No. 72 of NEW HAMPSHIRE. The American Legion Department though the active co-operation of post officials and members he has established for 1947 a membership record surpassing the average of the last four years" and is signed by the "NATIONAL COMMANDER", Paul H. Griffith and the opposite corner is dated 1947". The Purple Heart, the oldest medal still given today is awarded to service members for: "Being wounded or killed in any action against an enemy of the United States or as a result of an act of any such enemy or opposing armed forces". The medallion features a heart shaped, purple enamel center with the bust profile of George Washington and above an enameled shield of George Washington in red, white, and green. The medal is suspended from a rich purple and white silk ribbon. The reverse reads: "FOR MILITARY MERIT" and the medal is numbered: "275626".

CONDITION: 7+ (Very Fine+): The medal shows minor wear, with a small spot of enamel missing from front, the box shows light to moderate storage/age wear, paper artifacts included are in fine condition.
