ARTIFACT: Extremely rare WWII Manchukuo Flag produced in country. Manchukuo was a region of Northeastern China considered to be a puppet state of Imperial Japan. Before WWII Japan used Manchukuo as a base for Chinese attacks, but its close proximity to Russia proved disastrous for the country. After pushing China out of the region, a border war between the Mongolian People's Republic resulted in the Battle of Khalkhin Gol in 1939 and a combined Soviet-Mongolian force defeated the Japanese Kwantung Army. Later in 1945, the Soviet Union declared war against Japan after the Yalta Conference and the Manchurian Strategic Offensive Operation began. The field of the flag is yellow with a canton showing stripes of red, white, blue, and black. The yellow is said to symbolize the Manchu people, the red the Japanese or Yamato, blue the Han Chinese, white the Mongols, and black represents the Korean people. The white border of the flag displays kanji (Japanese writing) and below the number: "4" in stamped ink.
