ARTIFACT:
Rare, early WWII 7th Regiment California State Guard DI. The unit was staffed by African Americans and was garrisoned at Camp Temescal near the city of Corona. Established in the late 1800's the unit was originally known as the "Gold Diggers" in reference to the large number of recruits from the California's "Mother Lode" region. Later, after being stationed off the Santa Cruz River, they were also called the "Hungry Seventh" for the suffering they endured, particularly at Fort Mason during the Indian Wars. The DI depicts a red enameled number 7 in the center laid upon a white enamel state of California.

Enameled, gilt brass.

Single screw post with disc backing.
