ARTIFACT: Great circa 1910 Pennsylvania Coal & Iron police badge for the Ocean Coal Company. This example was worn by a police officer of Ocean Coal Company's private police force, better known as Coal & Iron Police - Pennsylvania's infamous experiment with privatization of law enforcement. Ocean Coal was a subsidiary of Berwind-White Coal Mining Company which operated bituminous mines in Westmoreland County, east of Pittsburgh. The company was involved in a particularly nasty strike in 1910-1911. The badge is shield-shaped with cutout star in the center that reads: "OCEAN COAL CO." and surrounding it reads: "COAL & IRON POLICE". The reverse shows a maker's mark that reads: "EDW. K. TRYON CO PHILA."

VINTAGE: Circa 1910

SIZE: Approximately 2-1/8" x 2-7/8"

MATERIALS / CONSTRUCTION: Nickeled brass, black paint

ATTACHMENT: Vertical kick pin with "C" type catch

MARKINGS: "EDW. K. TRYON CO PHILA."

ITEM NOTES: This is from a police and law enforcement collection which we will be listing more of over the next few months. CON-KDB-25-16 LCGEX11/16 SCFC/GEX2/17

CONDITION: 7+ (Very Fine+): The badge shows minor wear, spot of brass showing through in center, much of the nickel-plated and black painted details remain intact, overall very fine condition.

GUARANTEE: As with all my artifacts, this piece is guaranteed to be original, as described.
