ARTIFACT: Wonderful WWI German U-boat war patriotic pin. 1916 dated "Hail Victory" commemorating U-boat Lieutenant Commander Hans Rose, one of the most successful and highly decorated U-boat commanders in the Kaiserliche Marine during World War I. Rose, on occasion, before he sunk a ship, he'd wait until all the lifeboats were filled and throw a tow line. He was known for his humanity and fairness in battle, giving food and keeping all the survivors together until a rescuing destroyer appeared on the horizon. There exist many reports of him caring for survivors even when putting his own boat at risk. Hans Rose sank 79 ships.
