Elegant & Poignant Circa 1943 USAAF Wing with Gold Star by Amico Presented to NOK of KIA B-17 Pilot

ARTIFACT: This is an elegant yet sadly poignant circa 1943 United States Army Air Forces wing by Amico presented to the family of 2nd Lieutenant James "Jimmy" A. McRaven, killed in action on August 31, 1943. A part of the Army since 1940, McRaven was leaving Kearney Army Air Field, Nebraska the evening of the 31st in his B-17 when the craft suddenly caught fire. After an attempted landing the bomber crashed, killing McRaven and his seven fellow crew members upon impact. The wing comes with a period newspaper clipping reporting the death of McReven (sic), who was a Huntington Park, California native. The wing is in sterling silver with a gold star riveted at its center.

VINTAGE: Circa 1943 (World War II).

SIZE: Approximately 3/4" in height by 3" in width.

MATERIALS / CONSTRUCTION: Sterling silver, gilt brass; newsprint.

ATTACHMENT: Horizontal pin with come-under locking swivel catch.

MARKINGS: AMICO STERLING.
