ARTIFACT: This is a United States Army Air Forces 780th Bomb Squadron, 465th Bomb Group, 15th Air Force patch. The patch has a chain link border with a winged missile at its center.

Recently, I was lucky enough to be contacted by the son of the original designer of this patch. He alerted me to symbolism placed in the design of the insignia, that I had not been aware of.
Note in the upper part of the patch, the bomb "flash" in white, on the red background. Note that there are 7 points to the white "flash" and therefore 8 corresponding points to the red background. These, combined with the light blue round "0" at center make 780 for the 780th Bomb Squadron.
Also note the "chain link" border. there are 7 "open" or "front view" links, and 8 "closed" or "side view" links, these, combined with the round shape of the patch, representing an "0", also make 780 for the 780th Bomb Squadron.

VINTAGE: Circa World War II.

SIZE: About 5" in width by 5-1/4" in height.

MATERIALS / CONSTRUCTION: Fully embroidered with cotton embroidery thread.
