ARTIFACT:
Scarce early WWII United States Army Air Forces 66th Fighter Squadron, 57th Fighter Group, 9th & 12th Air Force. The 66th FS, 57th FG was assigned to the Middle East Task Force in Egypt as part of the IX Fighter Command in 1942 and took part in the British Western Desert Campaign. The Squadron was engaged in combat during the Battle of El Alamein. The Axis was defeated in Tunisia in 1943 and participated in the reduction of Pantelleria and the conquest of Sicily later that spring and summer. This example is circa 1942 – early 1943, silk-screened on leather and depicts a cigar smoking boxing rooster wearing a yellow shirt and red cap with the outer edge showing a blue border. The patch is unworn by shows moderate storage wear and pin holes from display.

CONDITION:
6- (Fine): The leather patch shows moderate storage wear, pin holes from being on display, small tear near rooster's toenail (does not detract much), the reverse shows adhesive residue, much of the silk-screened details remain intact, overall fine condition.
